Things You'll Need:
- new air filter
- tune-up
- tire pressure gauge
-
Step 1
First thing to do is to replace that old dirty air filter. You should notice a 10% plus increase in your car's mpg right away depending on how dirty your old filter was, and restore some lost power. Air filters are readily available at any parts store and are under 10$.
-
Step 2
Next, if your vehicle has not had a tune-up now is the time. Your car will never be an efficient machine without regular tune-ups. Change your oil and filter every 3000 miles, spark plugs and spark plug wires should also be checked. You will get better mileage and your car will last longer.
-
Step 3
Invest in a tire pressure gauge to check how much air is in your tires. These are cheap (2$?). Check your tires and inflate to the recomended pressure at your local gas station's air pump. This should be checked once per week. Operating on under inflated tires will cause you to lose at least 10% in mgg, and your car will not be safe to drive on under inflated tires.
-
Step 4
Lastly, here are a few more tips to get better mpg! From a stop do not slam on the gas to take off, you should take off easy and gradually. When cruising stay at a steady speed, and when you can stay under 60 mph and you will see less fuel being wasted.
