How to tune the guitar using harmonics

Tuning a guitar in a noisy environment? With one string in tune a person can tune a guitar rather easily. Using harmonics makes it even easier to hear the tone of the notes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  • One string in tune
  1. Step 1

    Assuming the E string is in tune, rest finger on E string on the fifth fret with index finger and pluck. Keep finger there. (Just rest finger on string, do not press down). (Make sure finger is on fret, not behind it).

    While holding the fifth fret, also do the same with the A string on the seventh fret with the ring finger.

  3. Step 3

    Tune the A string till you hear the harmony between the E string and A string. Continue this process with the rest of the strings.

    A string-fifth fret/ D string-string fret.

    D string-fifth fret/ G string seventh fret.

    B string twelfth fret/ low E string seventh fret.

    B string fifth fret/ E string seventh fret.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your index and ring fingers while tuning.
  • You can also use tuning technique from bottom to top.
  • Make sure finger is on fret, not behind it.
  • If you do not hear the harmonics, keep on practicing till you get it down. You will know when you hear it. Sounds like a beautiful bell.
