Make Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

Salt dough ornaments are fun and easy to make. Kids love to make them and then you have a keepsake to help you remember all of the fun you had when they were kids. The salt in the salt dough preserves the dough AND keeps little ones from eating the ornaments :-)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • paints or food coloring
  • ribbons or string
  • nail or pen for hole-punching
  1. Step 1

Combine all of the ingredients, except for the paint and ribbon of course, and then knead until it is smooth. (If you are making your ornaments all one color, you can add the food coloring here. I usually just paint mine)

  2. Step 2

Roll to about 1/4 inch and cut with a cookie cutter. I like to trace my kids hands with a toothpick. Or, you can make little figures. Just remember, the heavier they are the more they pull down those tree branches! Don't forget to add a hole. I usually use a pen or a big nail to do this.

  3. Step 3

Bake the ornaments in the oven at 225 degrees for half an hour. Make sure you check them frequently so they don't burn. Then, take them out to cool.

  4. Step 4

Finally, get the paints, glitter or whatever else you want to decorate them with and have a blast. Put the ribbon through the hole and Tah-dah you have your beautiful, original ornament to keep and treasure or give away.

on 10/19/2008 Augh!! I'd forgotten about these, but I remember we made them when we were kids. Great reminder, and now I can't wait to get going on these for Christmas this year ~ and many more, as they do tend to last forever, don't they?

Great job on this article!
