Ah the joys of cooking. Peeling that onion doesn't have to be so difficult. Its easy to peel and cut an onion with no tears.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Onion
  • Sharp Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Cold water
  1. Step 1

Chill your onion prior to cutting. The colder state slows the release of the enzymes that bring tears to your eyes. I don't usually freeze my onion as this tends to make the onion a bit mushy and harder to cut.

  2. Step 2

Cut your onions near running water or a steaming tea kettle. This will help to draw the enzymes away from the onion and your eyes.

  3. Step 3

Cut your onion in half vertically.

  4. Step 4

Place your two cut slices cut side down on your cutting board.

  5. Step 5

Cut off the two ends of each half of your onion and remove the top layers of your onion (the papery brown, white or red part and the top layer of skin of the actual onion).

  6. Step 6

Gently rinse your now cleaned onion under cold running water. This will help remove any papery residue left on the onion and it will also help to dissipate some of the enzymes that cause your eyes to tear up.

  7. Step 7

Your onion is now ready to slice. Simply slice crosswise and then turn and slice cross wise the other direction and you will have nice uniform pieces ready for your cooking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a sharp knife when slicing or chopping onions to prevent cutting yourself.
  • Make sure to keep your fingers slightly curled in order to prevent cutting yourself.
  • If you are on a "roll" and have a lot of onion you can get them all cleaned and sliced/chopped up and freeze them in a plastic sandwich type bag.
