Make Extra Money on Craigslist

Craigslist is a great place to buy and sell stuff cheap! Here are a couple of ways to make a little extra money using Craigslist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing to do is to familiarize yourself with Craigslist at www.craigslist.org . Find the listings for your city, or one near you and browse some of the ads to get a feel for it. Read the rules and the FAQ section.

  2. Step 2

Now you need something to sell. I suggest finding free items to sell. Here are a couple of ideas to find things to sell on Craigslist.

  3. Step 3

If you live in or near some apartments... Go dumpster diving! During the last week of the month, as people are moving out, you will be surprised at what you can find next to the dumpster: Furniture, bicycles, working televisions... I once found a Honda 750 cc Motorcycle that only needed $50 for parts to turn into a perfectly running machine!!

  4. Step 4

Try a "Freecycle" (www.freecycle.org) group in your area. Freecycle is a movement that connects people with stuff to give away for free, with people that want it. It Really works! Go to the above website and look for a group in your city... they are everywhere.

  5. Step 5

Maximize the money you make on Craigslist by cleaning your stuff up a little. If it is dusty, dust it. If it need a little paint, paint it. If in needs a screw or a bolt, fix it. But be frugal. If it cost over 5 bucks to repair, it is probably not worth it (except like the above mentioned Motorcycle).

  6. Step 6

Post your ad on Craigslist. Click on the "post it" icon and follow the instructions. You will probably be asked to set up a free account, but this is easy to do.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to find similar items listed on Craigslist to get a feel for the asking price
  • Don't post you address or phone number on Craigslist. Make the initial contact by email.
  • If possible, meet the buyer in a public place your exchange your item.
  • If you must have the buyer come to your house, bring the item outdoors, it is not a good idea to let strangers into your home.
  • If possible have a friend with you when you meet the buyer.
