Things You'll Need:
- ½ gallon cardboard milk carton
- Masking tape
- Brown shoe polish
- Stapler
- Pencil
- Stencil knife or craft knife
- Wire
-
Step 1
Open the milk carton all the way and wash it out well. Let the carton dry after washing. If you use soap to clean the carton, rinse it well so no bubbles or suds are left. Once the carton is clean and dry, close the top again and staple it closed.
-
Step 2
Use the masking tape to cover the outside of the carton. Use the brown shoe polish to cover the masking tape, and then let it dry.
-
Step 3
While the carton dries, imagine the size of the birds that will occupy this new home. Sparrows will need a larger entrance than robins. After the carton has dried, use a pencil to poke holes in the bottom for drainage. You can use anything round to draw the hole in the front of the birdhouse. A medicine bottle cap makes a good stencil.
-
Step 4
Cut a round hole in the front of the carton, close to the middle so the birds can freely enter and leave.
-
Step 5
Put a small hole on both sides of the top of the carton. Thread the wire through the holes and join the ends of the wire together to make a loop. Place the birdhouse in a place that will protect it from the elements. Under a patio awning would be ideal.
