How to speak in Renaissance, or Medieval English for Renaissance Fairs

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • to know how the older English is read/written
  • Shakespeare on tape/books
  • Some old movies to help you along the way
  1. Step 1

Make sure that you are dressed in Renaissance Attire:
Meaning for men: Breeches, tights/or pants, shamise, boots, swords, blousy shirts and vests.
Meaning for women: Skirts, underskirts, bodice, shamise, boots/shoes, bodice rose or buddy if you have one, sword if you are playing a pirate.
Please make sure no modern devices (cell phones, i pods, i phones, etc.) can be seen or heard, as you WILL be made fun of.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you practice your vowels, and say them slowly. This will help you pretend to speak in a F.B.A. or Fake Brittish Accent. The longer the vowels, the more you will have the accent down.
Speak your words very slowly, and try to replace common modern words with older ones: such as; thee, thou, thy
Read up on your Shakespeare, he can help you along the way.
See some of these movies: The Princess Bride, Much Ado About Nothing, Pirates of the Caribbean
If you don't know what to say, just smile and nod your head.
Say puns, for example, "Good sir, Thou hast a Bee on your bonnett." (it was really a B on a cap, but he looked for that B.)
Start with "How Fare thee this day?" and end with "Fare thee well, good sir"
If you see Royalty, please be sure to bow/curtsy. This is proper etiquette, and should be remembered if you would like to keep your head.

  3. Step 3

Have fun. Don't be too serious. Learn as much as you can from others who have done this for years. If you get stopped by the "Rennie Police", it's all done in fun.
