Things You'll Need:
- budget
- planning and preparation
-
Step 1
a great wool sweaterWhen shopping for winter clothes in retail stores, you want to buy your winter clothes after winter. January and February are the best months, usually, to do this although I have seen certain winter clothing items on sale, at rock-bottom prices, throughout the year so you just need to keep your eyes open for when winter clothing goes on sale.
If you're buying winter clothing for children in these sales, for next winter, then you'll need to estimate what size you think they will wear by then and do your best. -
Step 2
Budget some money for the after Christmas sales too because a lot of what is in the store marked as Christmas gifts is nothing more than winter clothing; hats, scarfs, wool socks, gloves, etc. After Christmas day the prices on these items will go way down and that's the time you want to buy them.
-
Step 3
Make sure that the quality of the clothing you want to purchase is satisfactory too, because you don't want stuff that falls apart after a few wearings, even if you did get it on sale dirt cheap.
-
Step 4
rainy weatherBuy your wool sweaters, wool pants, and coats at thrift stores, garage sales, and on eBay.
There are usually a ton of these winter clothing items around in the summertime when nobody wants them, so that's when you want to buy them. Again, look for quality brands, 100% wool sweaters, and don't buy the cheap stuff. -
Step 5
brrr it's cold outsideYou can sometimes get free winter clothing on freecycle, or through craigslist's free section, and by exchanging with friends and neighbors, or through hand me downs from those same family members or friends.
Never refuse good winter clothing if it is offered to you. Quality clothing is worth a lot, and having someone you know pass on what they don't want or need is good for everyone. Reuse and recycle good winter clothing whenever you can. -
Step 6
winter street sceneBuy quality winter clothing when on sale through some of the online or catalog outdoor stores that sell quality outdoor clothing. See the resources section below for a few good places to buy high-quality boots, wool socks, and other winter clothing for discount prices during their clearance sales.
These stores are great places to find the very latest in winter or cold weather clothing. -
Step 7
winter weatherTake good care of your winter clothing, you won't want to replace it every year so clean it the way the manufacturer tag recommends. Mend tears as soon as you notice them too and treat winter boots properly so that you can extend their wear for many years. Anytime you don't have to buy new clothing is good for your pocketbook.
