Step 1
Image from commons.wikimedia.orgThink of a song that you want to parody. Thinking of this first will help you come up with a parody idea because you'll have the tune in mind. If possible, listen to the song for some inspiration.
-
Step 2
Think of a fun topic for your parody. Get as silly as you want. Try to draw inspiration from the original lyrics, beat and rhyme scheme.
For example, take Hit Me Baby, One More Time by Britney Spears, and turn it into a song about the big purple dinosaur Barney shaking his butt. Shake it Barney, you're so fine!
I understand that example's kind of disturbing (and I so don't want to see that), but it gets the point across. -
Step 3
Stay away from typical stuff - go for something outrageous. For example, I did a song for a class project called "Bleacher Cleaner" to the tune of Jill Sobule's Supermodel. It went something like:
I don't care what the bleachers say
I wanna be a bleacher cleaner
Everyone is gonna laugh at me
Wait and see
When I'm a bleacher cleaner
And the rows will shine like the sea
Everyone is gonna laugh, laugh at me, me
Cuz they're clear, and so bright, and so beautiful
I wanna be the bleacher cleaner.
There was more but this was in high school, so some of it has been lost from my memory. The point is, it makes use of the original lyrics and rhythm, and is completely ridiculous. -
Step 4
Have fun with it and don't take yourself seriously. By putting too much thought and effort into it, you'll take the fun away. Even simple changes can make songs fun. My friend once changed the song that goes "Have I told you lately that I love you?" into "Have I told you lately that I hate you?" and went from there. We were cracking up within minutes.

on 10/18/2008 Nice tips! There is a website called amiright that accepts parody songs- maybe you could include that in your article. Just a thought. :)
