For adults, selecting a good mattress is as important of a decision as choosing an automobile. You probably spend more time on your mattress. If you are not sleeping well because of your mattress, this article will give you tips on how to select a new mattress that is right for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shopping online for a mattress is not the way to go! You must be prepared to go to a local shop and lie on mattresses. Don't be shy or intimidated. You are investing in your health and well being. You must spend time trying 3 different types of mattresses: (1)Innerspring Mattress (2) Memory Foam Mattress (3)Latex Mattress

  2. Step 2
    Premium InnerSpring Mattress
    Premium InnerSpring Mattress

InnerSpring Mattress: The brand name is not important. What is important is the mattress you try have the following features: A) A good support system (coils). B). Foam encased edges. C). Premium Foam Layers (either/or memory and latex foam).

Pick a mattress in the middle price range of the lineup. Lie on it for about 10 minutes. Position yourself the way you spend the majority of time sleeping. Just evaluate the "feel and comfort". Don't make any decisions yet!

  3. Step 3
    Memory Foam Mattress
    Memory Foam Mattress

Memory Foam Mattresses: These springless mattresses will feel completely different than most folks are use to. It is very important to lie on a memory foam mattress for at least 10 minutes to determine whether you will like it or not! Again lie on the middle price range of this lineup. Position yourself the way you normally sleep. It's still not decision time yet!

  4. Step 4
    Latex Mattress
    Latex Mattress

Latex Mattresses: These mattresses are also a springless system. They have a different feel than memory foam mattresses. They will feel more traditional. Usually a showroom will feature latex mattresses in 3 different firmness' s. Choose the medium firmness for your testing. Again spend about 10 minutes in your sleeping position.

  5. Step 5

Now its decision time! You should have a pretty good feeling as to which category you like best. Eliminate the other two. Go back to the category you like the best. Lie on several mattresses within this group. Test both more expensive and less expensive mattresses. This process should help you choose which mattress is most comfortable for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is no "one perfect mattress" that is right for everyone. You have to choose what is right for you. Spending time selecting a mattress will pay extra dividends in the long run.
  • All the above mattresses categories should have more than enough support for most people. Be sure to choose a mattress on comfort.
  • Sleep Trials are generally not necessary if you take time and effort when selecting a mattress.
  • Find a good mattress retailer in your area that represent a good selection of mattresses in each category.
  • Mattress salespersons can be good, bad or indifferent. Don't let a salesperson herd you to "their" best mattress! Allow them to point out the 3 categories they represent. If they know you have done your research, you will probably gain their respect.
  • Mattresses Are Not Cheap! Don't shop on price, shop for comfort! They are an investment and should last you a long time.
  • More expensive does not necessarily mean better! Sometimes, when deciding between two mattresses, the cheaper one may feel better. You must feel a comfort level benefit to spend more.
