Things You'll Need:
- dry fly
-
Step 1
A dry fly is an imitator of an insect found near a trout stream. Usually the real thing does not have bright or exotic colors. Flies which employ a lot of color are said to be attractor flies meaning they are getting attention via curiosity.
-
Step 2
In previous articles you were informed that trout reside facing the current in streams. This means that dry flies are fished upstream with the cast coming from behind the fish and dropping very gently in front of them. The fishermen must "mend" the line, pull it with his hand so that the fly always appears to have just dropped onto the water from above. A dry fly fished in the wrong direction or without cast mending will quickly show the leader attached on the surface giving you away as a fake.
-
Step 3
Generally speaking, dry fly fishing is best when a natural hatch is on the stream. In most places this happens at least twice a day. The evening hatch low light just before dark is usually the stronger hatch and it is easy to know when the hatch is "on". Bugs are in your face and fish are jumping in the stream. Pay attention to what you see in terms of color and size then do your best to "match the hatch".
