Things You'll Need:
- Credit card/cash
- Your shopping list of kitchen tools
- Coupons
-
Step 1
Here's your list of must have tools:
One of each:
1. paring knife
2. chef's knife
3. cutting board
4. kitchen shears
5. grater (box or microplane)
6. large cookie sheet
7. 3 - 4 quart pot
8. 10 - 12 inch pan
9. pressure cooker OR slow cooker
10. cast iron skillet (preferably pre-seasoned) OR dutch oven (for stovetop to oven cooking) -
Step 2
Evaluate your current kitchen tools.
If you have one of the basic tools and it is in good shape, cross it off the list. Decide between the choices in 9 and 10 based on how you cook. -
Step 3
Go shopping, online or in person.
Make your selections by reading reviews online at several sites. (I tend to use amazon.com for the sheer number and quantity of reviews of many brands. More gourmet cooks may prefer cooking sites for a professional opinion.)
Look for great sales and coupons to defray your initial expense.
And if you shop online, see if the online rebates at ebates.com are applicable for your purchases. (You must sign up.) -
Step 4
Wash all new tools with hot, soapy water.
(A cast iron skillet can be cleaned with water only and needs to be dried immediately to keep from rusting.) -
Step 5
Dry your tools and assign them a new home somewhere handy in your kitchen.
-
Step 6
Get cooking!

on 10/22/2008 6 large cookie sheets?! Will you pack my lunch? I'm glad you mention the cast iron skillet. Nothing fries better. And I was just thinking about a pressure cooker...it's great for busy days, and I do work a lot. 5 Stars.

on 10/16/2008 This is also a great list to use when shopping for a bridal shower. You can make a pretty big "Kitchen Starter" basket with all of this.
