How to turn a jpeg image into a sketch in Gimp

Save

Although you might not have the training to sketch realistic people with a pencil and paper, you can achieve a similar effect using the free image manipulation tool -- GIMP -- on your computer. GIMP has a built-in filter that makes an image look like a cartoon. By combining this tool with a color filter that converts images to black and white, you can make an image appear as though it were sketched with a pencil.

  • Launch GIMP using the desktop or Start menu shortcut. Click "File" and "Open," and browse to locate and open the picture that you want to turn into a sketch. Double-click the picture to open it.

  • Click the "Filters" menu at the top of the screen, and then click "Artistic" and "Cartoon." This displays a new window with the title "Cartoon."

  • Drag the "Mask Radius" slider at the bottom of the window to the left to preserve more of the original detail in the image, or to the right to make the image appear drawn with a thicker pencil.

  • Drag the "Percent Black" slider to the right to darken the image.

  • Click "OK" to apply the change to the image. The image should now have an effect that simulates a hand-drawn picture. However, it is still in color. Continue to the next step.

  • Click the "Image" menu at the top of the screen, and then click "Mode" and "Grayscale." This converts the image to black and white, making it appear sketched with a pencil.
