Lilies are among the most diverse groups of flowers that grow in the world. There are almost a dozen classifications of lily hybrids with dozens more types of lilies within those classes. Regardless of what type of lily you prefer, they all start off as bulbs. This article will describe how to plant lily bulbs should you want to start your lily garden from the very beginning.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spade
  • Garden gloves
  • Lily bulbs
  • Water hose
  1. Step 1

Test and prepare your soil for growth. If your soil is mostly clay, you will want to make sure you are prepared to make proper drainage arrangements. For example, if you have heavy clay in your soil, you may consider planting on a slope so that the water will drain down.

  2. Step 2

Start digging holes in the soil according to lily bulb size. Most lily bulbs should be planted in holes at least three inches deep. If you have smaller bulbs they should be planted at least one foot apart. Larger bulbs will need to be at least 18 inches apart.

  3. Step 3

Spread the bulb roots to make sure they have every opportunity to soak up water and nutrients. Make sure there are no air pockets or any other obstructions to the roots or bulbs, such as dense clay. Cover the lily bulbs with two to three inches of soil.

  4. Step 4

Water your lily bulbs immediately after planting and covering with soil. Give it a generous amount of water.

  5. Step 5

Mark each planted area with something so that you can easily locate the bulbs. Lily bulbs are very sensitive, especially when the first plant shoots come out of the ground. By marking them, you will be extra careful around them if you decide to do any garden work on other plants near the area.
