Autumn yellow and orange kalanchoes are the perfect gift for the holidays. Plant them in a wicker basket and attach a nice big red bow. Kalanchoes come in many different colors, including red with pink and purple with white. If you are looking for holiday flowers, why not choose an assortment of kalanchoes. Just like with all types of plants, kalanchoes have their own special growing instructions. If you are looking for the best way to grow these delicate blooms, read through the following steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kalanchoe plants
  • Potting soil
  • Water soluble fertilizer
  • Garden snips
  1. Step 1

Purchase your kalanchoe plant when it is in bud stage. If the flowers are in full bloom you'll only have about one month left to enjoy the beauty.

  2. Step 2

Give your kalanchoe plant nice bright lighting, but not direct. Because kalanchoe plants are best grown indoors, put them near a window for maximum lighting exposure.

  3. Step 3

Water occasionally when the soil dries out. Too much water is not beneficial. Check the soil with your fingertips and if the soil feels moist, do not water.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your flower pots or planter boxes have proper drainage. Do not let water gather on top of the soil as this can cause the plant to rot.

  5. Step 5

Add a house plant water soluble fertilizer only between the months of March through October. A quality brand is Bachman's Excel Gro. Follow the manufacturer's directions.

  6. Step 6

Cut off any blooms that are dead or dying. This enables new flowering and longer lasting blooms.

Tips & Warnings
  • For best results, grow your kalanchoes indoors, or plant them in small pots placed outside in non-direct sunlight.
  • Direct sun alters the color of the kalanchoe leaves and inhibits proper growth.
  • Avoid over watering as this will turn kalanchoe leaves yellow.
