Bantu knots are a braids or twists that are wrapped into a ball and lay near the scalp. They are also known as Zulu knots, and are a popular hairstyle among African Americans. Bantu knots can be applied to hair of any length and thickness. They were originally very popular in the 1970s, along with other natural styles like the Afro.

    Things You'll Need

    • Wide-toothed comb
    • Rat-tail comb
    • Moisturizer
    • Gel
    • Rubber bands
    • Oil sheen
      • 1

Comb and detangle your hair. You need to have two combs to create this style: a wide-toothed comb for detangling, and a rat-tail comb for parting the hair. Detangle your hair in sections, starting from the ends and working to the root. Once you are done, apply a light moisturizer.

Use the rat-tail comb to part your hair into small sections. The size of the sections will vary depending on the length of your hair and how big you want the knots to be. On average, a 1-inch part will do the trick.

Apply gel to your hair, then take a section and twist it with your fingers. Once the hair tightens with the twist, wrap it around itself and tuck the ends under the twist. At this point, it should look like a knot. Secure the knot by wrapping it with a rubber band.

Once you have created the Bantu knots all over your head, spritz your hair with a light finishing spray, such as an oil sheen.
