Guys hate to buy lingerie for their wives, even if the latter are proverbial goddesses. And if your wife happens to “big-boned” or a little heavy, you'd probably rather spend time in jail than to buy intimate apparel for her. For one thing, you have no idea what things like that cost. Besides, you'll probably end up picking out the wrong items for her anyway, and you'll have to start all over again. Here are a few ideas that may make your quest for your wife's new lingerie less stressful.

Know whether you wife is at ease with her body or is self-conscious about how she looks. If it's the latter, respect her point of view by buying things that are sexy but will not make her feel threatened or vulnerable. A good choice might be a nice gown-and-robe set with a plunging neckline, or a nice, colorful shift.

Don't guess her size, because you'll invariably get it wrong. You want her to feel confident wearing what you buy, and how well the lingerie fits her is important. There are two different sizing systems manufacturers use for plus sizes: by number (16, 18, 20, etc.) and by X's (1X, 2X, etc.). You will need to know her size in both of these systems. Check her closet for the sizes of clothing you know she wears (because there will be some items in there that are too large or too small).

Avoid looking for bargains. In general, less expensive lingerie may look great on a model or on a hanger, but it is often made of lower-quality material. Besides, these pieces can be very unflattering: They either don't hang well or are uncomfortable because of rough lace or trim that can irritate the wearer's skin. As is the case with shoes, pieces of lingerie are worth the money if they are comfortable and look nice.

Understand that there is a huge mark-up on lingerie; typically, you will pay top dollar at your local lingerie store. If you have time, see what is available at those stores, then shop for them online. The chances are good that you will see the same items for less money, because online retailers aren't saddled with the costs associated with owning a store.

Be prepared for your wife to want to return an item or two, even if you have followed all of the above steps. Make sure you or she can return or exchange what you've bought, either at your local store or online. This is especially important because some lingerie is nonreturnable.
