Remember Columbus Day by making these little ships that came to discover the new land. Even the youngest child can do this project with a little help with the cutting. This craft is made with things you probably already have around the house, and will keep the children busy for a while. Making these ships while being told or reading about Columbus Day is a great teaching tool, helping children learn what this holiday is all about.

Cut 12 small squares, 6 large triangles and 6 small triangles from craft foam to be used as sails. Glue the small triangles on the top of the toothpick by gluing the triangles together over the toothpick. Glue the large triangles under the small ones. Break off about 1/4 of 6 toothpicks. Glue the squares over the tops of the toothpicks. Let glue dry for about 20 minutes.

Put a ball of clay into the painted cups. Stick the toothpicks with the sails on them into the clay. The one with the triangle sails goes in the middle and the square ones in front and in back.

Cut a cardboard box down to leave only about a 1 inch lip. Paint everything but the bottom blue. Let the paint dry for about 20 minutes.

Put a dab of glue on the box and set one of the boats on the glue. Repeat with the other two. It should look like the boats are in the water.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Add whitecaps to the water and draw designs on the bigger sails to make it fancier.
