How to Treat Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Blocked fallopian tubes are one of the most common fertility problems. Getting diagnosed and treated correctly is important and knowing your options is key. Here are guidelines.

1. Consult with your OB/GYN about your concerns regarding blocked fallopian tubes. You might suspect this problem due to fertility issues, past ectopic pregnancy, or pain.

2. Often the first test ordered will be an HSG, or hysterosalpingography. In this procedure dye is injected into cervix and then an x-ray performed. If adhesions or other abnormal tissue is detected it may be removed at this time.

3. Another procedure that might be used is the laparoscopy, in which a small cut is made beneath the belly button area and the pelvic area examined. Again, if abnormal tissue is found, it may be removed then.

4. If HSG or laparascopy is used and the blockage cannot be treated during the procedures, sometimes the patient might be a candidate for surgery to correct blocked tubes. If this is the case, the patient should find a specialist who is skilled in this particular field to increase the odds of success.

5. If the cause of the blockage is due to past ectopic pregnancy, be aware that repeat ectopic pregnancies are common even after surgery. Finding an especially skilled surgeon is important.
