Tips for Hemming Blue Jeans

If you are short in stature, it can be quite a challenge to find jeans that fit in the waist and in length, especially if you don't want to spend a bundle on a new pair of jeans. Of course, you can always purchase a pair of jeans that fit in the waist and then simply take them to a tailor to have them shortened, so that they fit you in length, but it will cost you. If you would like to buy jeans off the rack and save some money on having them tailored to fit you in length, then follow these steps to learn how you can hem your jeans and avoid the tailor all together.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Jeans
    • Matching thread
    • Scissors
    • Measuring tape
    • Pins
    • Iron
    • Sewing machine
    • 100/16 Sewing machine needle
      • 1

Put the jeans on and have a friend mark where you would like the new hem to fall with pins. It is a good idea to make the jeans a little longer than necessary for them to just hit the ground in case the jeans shrink over time and also because different shoes may make the jeans look too short.

Make sure that the marking pins are at the same length all the way around both legs of your jeans using your measuring tape.

      • 3

Cut the excess denim from the bottom of your jeans, leaving 1 inch for your seam allowance.

      • 4

Iron your jeans so that when you go to fold your seams, they fold nice and neat.

      • 5

Turn your jeans inside out so that you can fold the seams easier than if you had to fold them under.

      • 6

Fold the end of each leg up ½ inch, pin the fold in place and iron this fold. Then fold them up another ½ inch. Pin and iron this fold as well.

      • 7

Begin to top stitch 1/8 inch from the top of your hem around a seam, hand turning your machine over the seams to help prevent your needle from breaking. Trim any excess thread from your hems and you are done.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Make sure that you anchor your hem so that it doesn't come unraveled later on, forcing you to resew the hem.

    • Watch your fingers while sewing your hem; it is possible to sew your fingers.
