Endorsing a Check for a Minor

Quite often, minors will receive a check endorsed to them. Whether for a birthday gift or a service provided (such as babysitting or yard work), it may be difficult for them to cash the check without any identification. There is the possibility of having the check endorsed and cashed by the parent. Knowing the steps to take will get your minor child the cash from the check as soon as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the check to make sure of the name it is made out to. If it is made out to your child, take the next step.

    • 2

Have your child sign the back of the check in the appropriate place. It should have a designated area for a signature. The name signed must be exactly spelled as the name the check is made out to. If it includes a middle initial, the signature must too. If it is just the first and last name, the signature must match.

    • 3

Sign your name in the same area, either under or above your child's signature.

    • 4

Take the check to the bank. Usually you will have two choices with this. You can take the check to your own bank and cash it, or you can cash it at the bank it originated from. Either way, you may need to provide some identification, such as a driver's license or a state ID.

    • 5

Give your child the cash from the check.
