How to Use Ginger Root

Ginger root can be used several different ways. It is commonly used as a spice in Chinese, Japanese and Indian dishes because it has a deliciously strong flavor. Ginger (Zingiber officionale) is also used to treat certain ailments. Whether you want to enjoy its taste or take advantage of its health benefits, follow these steps to use it.       Consider taking ginger root pills if you suffer from a digestive imbalance or want to alleviate inflammation associated with arthritis. Before taking ginger root pills, though, see your doctor to get approval to take ginger root pills and rule out any serious illnesses.

      Cook with ginger if you like its taste or want to boost your immune system. Use it to make fast and simple dishes such as ginger chicken, ginger shrimp or ginger broccoli. Also bake with ginger and make gingerbread.

      Make hot tea with a piece of ginger root to help treat a cold or the flu. Steep a piece of peeled ginger root in a cup of hot water and drink when the tea is no longer hot.

      Make a ginger poultice to put on your chest if you have congestion in that area. To make the poultice, add a little warm olive oil to some grated ginger and put this paste-like mixture on a piece of gauze large enough to cover the chest area. Place the gauze on your chest and leave on for several hours, but no more than 24 hours.
