How to Catch the Bouquet at a Wedding

How to Catch the Bouquet at a Wedding thumbnail
Quick hands will help you catch the flowers at a wedding reception.

Wedding receptions are known for their traditions, and one of the most fun parts is catching the bouquet or the garter. The bouquet toss requires the bride to gather all the single women attending the wedding to a centralized location. She then turns her back and tosses her bouquet into the air. Legend has it that the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next one to be married.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your space in the crowd wisely. You should choose a spot where you have room to move, so you will be able to move forward, backward and to each side easily, depending on where the bouquet is tossed. If you are packed into the middle of the crowd, you won't have the ability to move easily to catch the bouquet.

    • 2

Position yourself depending on your height. If you are shorter, you should stand toward the front of the crowd. Otherwise, people will reach over the top of you to catch the bouquet. If you are in the front, you have a better chance of catching the bouquet if it is thrown short. If you are taller, you may fare better if you stand toward the middle or back of the crowd, as you can reach over others more easily.

    • 3

Wear high-heeled shoes. This will give you some extra height and allow you to reach a bit further to catch the bouquet. While heels are not the easiest to jump in, they will give you a taller start to begin with.

    • 4

Be courteous but aggressive. There is no need to throw elbows in order to beat the other women to catch the bouquet. However, you should establish your area in the crowd and be aggressive in reaching or lunging for the bouquet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful to avoid the elbows of other women trying to catch the bouquet. Some women can be very aggressive in trying to catch the flowers.
