In any retail business creating effective displays is an art. Knowing how to entice potential customers to enter and explore your shop is your ultimate goal. Similarly, you want to encourage repeat shoppers to come back for more. Simply considering the impulses and preference of shoppers is the key to creating effective retail displays. With the tips outlined here, you’ll find some suggestions for increasing the traffic and interest in your products which will also increase the likelihood of purchases.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place seasonal displays closest to the entry to draw in customers. The changes of the seasons are always inviting and can be incorporated into any type of business. Since these areas update at least every few months, you’ll also be keeping your window displays or main entry versatile.

  2. Step 2

Move around display furniture frequently. Simply moving displays from one area of a shop to another changes the flow of shoppers. Especially in targeting regular or repeat customers, you want to mix things up so they have a greater chance of seeing things they may have missed before. Do not underestimate the power of simply moving around what you already have for increasing sales.

  3. Step 3

Vary the height of pieces in individual displays. As a general rule, place taller objects in the back to increase their visibility.

  4. Step 4

Arrange themes in displays. Consider, for instance, creating displays by color or similar products. Candles, lotions or soaps in a variety of scents should be in one display so that customers can easily compare all the options. Similarly, grouping like objects is effective in encouraging customers to purchase more than one item.

  5. Step 5

Place small items in baskets, bowls or bins where customers can access them easily without small products being lost in a larger display. People like to rummage through displays, so providing several bins for small objects can be a profitable display choice.

  6. Step 6

Place light colored objects against darker colored backgrounds and vice versa. The contrast of shades allows your products to show up better.

  7. Step 7

Highlight a bargain area and keep it in a common space. This way, return customers looking for good deals will know where to find them in your business. Try to select a spot, however, that is near the back of the store, so that customers will need to walk past your main displays in order to get to the bargain section.

Tips & Warnings
  • If a display is for something a customer would wear, such as clothing, hats or jewelry, be sure to place an adequately sized mirror in the same area as those products.
