How to Make a Sheath for a Hatchet
When you buy a brand new, premium quality hatchet, it usually comes with a durable leather sheath that you can attach with snaps. But if your new hatchet isn’t one of the premium models or if you pick up an older hatchet at a yard sale or auction, consider making a sheath of your own. You don’t need anything fancy; a simple piece of rubber garden hose can offer all of the protection you need to keep your hatchet blade sharp. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Find an old rubber garden hose that you don’t intend to use again. This can come from your own supplies, from the garbage or even from the bargain bins at hardware stores and resale shops. Some of the larger hardware stores even sell hose by the foot, so you might be able to find some there if you don’t have an old hose on hand.

2
Measure the length of the blade edge on your hatchet. Straighten a length of the hose and measure out a section of equal length. Cut this section away from the rest using a sharp razor utility knife.

3
Use the utility knife to cut a slit along the length of the section of hose. Make sure that the slit goes all the way through the rubber, and also that you only cut through one side of the hose.
-
4
Slide the slit portion of the hose over the blade edge of the hatchet. The stiffness of the hose itself should hold it in place. With this rubber protector on, you can safely store your hatchet in a cluttered drawer or toolbox without worrying about damaging the blade edge.

Tips & Warnings
You can also make these sheaths for full-sized axes.
Be very careful when using a utility knife to cut hoses that are very stiff and dense. These hoses may be quite difficult to cut through, and if you force your knife the wrong way, you could break the razor inserts.
