How to Check Your IP Address on Mac OS X

Knowing your active IP (Internet Protocol) address is useful for troubleshooting, networking and file sharing. Your active IP address is easily available in your Network Preference Pane.

      In the Finder, click on the "Apple Menu" in the upper left-hand corner of the menubar. Cursor down to "System Preferences" and release the mouse/trackpad button to launch "System Preferences."

      In the open "System Preferences" window, select and single-click the "Network" icon to open the "Network Preferences" window.

      In the "Network" window, click on the first item in the list of available network connections on the left-hand side of the screen. The active connection will have a green dot before the name of the connection, indicating that the connection is active.

      Click on the "Advanced" button on the lower right-hand side of the "Network" window to open the "Advanced" window.

      In the "Advanced" network options, click on the "TCP-IP" button from the row of buttons at the top.

      The IP address of your Mac will be displayed to the right of the "IPV4 Address" dialogue. This address number is the currently active IP address of your Mac.
