Today, elliptical machines are among the most popular aerobic/weight training equipment available. The benefits of using an elliptical machine are many. Upper and lower body get a workout with less joint impact while at the same time burning more calories than if you were on a stair stepper or a treadmill. So, yes, choosing to use elliptical machines as a big part of your exercise regimen is a big benefit. But how do you know which elliptical machines are right for your needs and your budget? Below are steps to take to help you make sure you get the elliptical equipment you need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the basics of how elliptical machines work. A combination of a stair master and a cross-country ski machine, the elliptical machine allows your lower body to get the workout by placing your feet on the pedals and moving in an oval shape motion. At the same time, you place your hands on handlebars and move your arms back and forth thus giving you both upper and lower body workouts. These movements vary in difficulty based on how the resistance is set on the machine.

  2. Step 2

Understanding the resistance of an elliptical machine helps you to choose the model that offers you the benefits you desire. For most home based elliptical machines, a band around the rim of the flywheel provides the resistance. There may be a control panel allowing you to set different levels of resistance. Checking the resistance settings is an important step in choosing the right elliptical machine for your needs. The difference is resistance has a heavy impact on the price of machines.

  3. Step 3

Once you find a machine you are considering for purchase, don’t buy it unless you have tried a floor model. During this step of the buying process, you will want to check for the smoothness level of moving your feet. A machine that doesn’t glide smoothly is not recommended for purchase. Some of the cheaper models can be uncomfortable to use.

  4. Step 4

Check all aspects of comfort and usability. Understand you’re going to be using your new elliptical machine on a daily basis. If you choose one that’s uncomfortable or difficult to operate, chances are you'll get tired of using it quickly and will discontinue use after even a few days or weeks. Make sure you personally test all aspects of the machine before you purchase.

  5. Step 5

Finally, once you know which machine you want, the final step is to begin to check pricing. Shopping around is a good idea. You can find a wide variety of prices for elliptical machines ranging from around $500 up to $2000 or more. In general, the lower priced machines are less stable and more uncomfortable to operate. Make sure to compare machines. Don’t just settle because of a less expensive price.
