Let's do the math!

Math is important in everyone’s lives, even if college isn’t a factor. Think about going to the grocery store. Apples are 50 cents each. You plan to buy five apples. How much are you going to spend? Two dollars and 50 cents. This answer is easy if you know the multiplication table, the foundation of mathematics.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a sheet of paper and write the numbers 1 through 10 across the top of the sheet. Make sure your writing is legible. If your handwriting is poor, ask someone with good handwriting to complete this step.

  2. Step 2

Draw vertical lines down the length of the sheet of paper before the first number, in between the numbers and after the last number to create columns. End the columns at the same length, which should be close to the bottom of the sheet.

  3. Step 3

Write the number 1 to the left of the first line and below the row of numbers written in Step 1. Continue writing the number 2 through 10 down the left side of the first line, each number below the previous one. Space the numbers so that they take up most of the length of the paper.

  4. Step 4

Draw horizontal lines across the sheet of paper above the number 1 written in Step 3, in between each of the numbers written in Step 3, and after the last number written in Step 3. You should now have a table with numbers at the top and down the left side.

  5. Step 5

Make photocopies of your table. The number of copies can vary depending on how quickly you can memorize a filled-in table. Start with 20 copies and make more if you run out.

  6. Step 6

Have someone who knows the multiplication table fill in the table with the correct numbers. This will be your answer sheet. Take one of the blank tables and fill in each block inside the table by multiplying the number at the top and the number at the left. If you don’t know the answer, check the answer sheet.

  7. Step 7

Continue filling out blank tables until you no longer need to look at the answer sheet. This process usually takes several weeks at a minimum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have someone ask you verbally each box in the multiplication table, such as, “What is 2 times 4?” This can be done while traveling in a car.
