How to Make Wood Chisel Sheaths From Old Work Gloves
Wood chisels are only safe and effective to use when they’re exceptionally sharp. And if you’re just tossing yours into a big toolbox with all of your other hand tools, they won’t stay sharp for long. The more expensive wood chisels come with leather sheaths, but many of the cheaper models don’t come with sheaths of any kind. If you don’t have anything protecting your chisels, you can make your own out of an old work glove and some shoelaces. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Old work glove, preferably leather
- Scissors
- Nail
- Shoelaces
- Wood chisels

1
Use scissors to cut the fingers off of an old work glove. You only need to cut off one finger per chisel in your toolbox, but as long as you’re destroying the glove, you might as well cut off all four of the fingers (but not the thumb). You can save these extra sheaths for other tools you might acquire in the future.

2
Use a nail to punch several holes through each finger, starting about 1/4 inch above the open end. Make each hole about 1/2 inch apart; the number of holes will vary depending on the size of the glove. These holes will be the eyelets for the drawstrings you will make in your new sheath.

3
Cut two shoelaces evenly in half. String each half shoelace through the eyelets. Weave the laces in one side of the glove fingers and out the other to secure them in place.

4
Slide each sheath over the sharp end of a wood chisel in your toolbox. Pull the laces tight and tie them in a knot to hold the covers on the chisels.

Tips & Warnings
If you don’t have an old pair of leather work gloves, look at thrift stores and resale shops. You might be able to find a pair priced as low as a dollar, which is a great price for a good, long-lasting set of chisel sheaths.
