1
Study your source material. If you examine photographs of insects, realistic drawings of bugs and actual bugs, you will notice that most of them have segmented bodies. Their bodies are comprised of a head, a thorax (midsection), and an abdomen (otherwise known as a giant bug booty). They also have antennae and compound eyes. Six segmented legs pop out of the thorax, as well as two to four wings, if present in the particular species of insect. The abdomen may appear segmented, depending on the insect.

2
Select an insect to depict. Study the shapes of its three body segments. Also examine the way in which the three body parts come together and their relationships to each other.

3
Assemble your materials. You may want to supplement your basic supplies with color markers, color pencils, water color, black India ink with dip pen, or a #1 or #2 watercolor brush. Begin with pencil and sketch the three distinct shapes of the insect's body. You may want to do several sketches on cheap paper to get the feel for your new best friend.

4
Commit to the more expensive paper. Go ahead and draw the three shapes that you have been sketching. Add details for eyes, antennae and legs. Note the details of the bug's segmentation in the mouth area, the antennae, the legs and the abdomen. Don't be shy to erase and fix sections of the drawing. If necessary, add wings.

Explore the possibilities of color. Here is where your imagination can and should run wild. After all, you are creating cartoon bugs, so think surreal, bright and anti-natural. You can add color with water color, colored pencils, markers or a combination of these media. For a professional cartoon finish, add black India ink outlines with a fine watercolor brush, dip pen or black marker
