It is impossible to find a city that is as vegan-friendly as the great mecca of Los Angeles. There are over a dozen restaurants that serve only vegan food, and many grocery stores stock entire vegan sections. It doesn't stop there. Businesses are hearing the cries of consumers who want to buy makeup free of animal byproducts and that hasn't been tested on animals. Being a vegan goes beyond your food choices. Supporting vegan businesses of all kinds is an important--and easy--thing to do for the active vegan Los Angeleno!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to Sephora. There are locations all over Los Angeles--from the entertainment complex by the Mann's Chinese theater in Hollywood to many of the local malls. While the entire business is far from vegan, there are some great vegan makeup choices there, such as Urban Decay. Its products are vegan, PETA-approved and have not been tested on animals.

  2. Step 2

Stop by Aveda. The store is vegetarian, and most of the products are vegan. You can purchase makeup, shampoo, conditioner and lotions at this natural store. Simply look out for beeswax in the product descriptions. Stop by the Aveda store in the Beverly Center to try some free products, or visit any of the many branches in the Los Angeles area, including one in Santa Monica by the Promenade.

  3. Step 3

Go for lunch or dinner at Real Food Daily. You can go to the original location in Santa Monica or its sister location in West Hollywood (located a couple of blocks north from the Beverly Center on La Cienega). This is an all-vegan restaurant. Instead of added sugar, you get options for natural sweetener alternatives. You can get vegetarian "meatless" loaf or a wonderful vegan version of spaghetti and meatballs.

  4. Step 4

Stop by Native Foods. This Westwood-based eatery is one of the great vegan casual eateries in Los Angeles. Grab a quick bite to eat, or eat a full lunch there with friends. The cafeteria-style seating is relaxed and comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Do your grocery shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. While the entire stores are not vegan, they support many vegan businesses. Vegan products line the shelves. Support only the vegan businesses that stock the stores. The Santa Monica Co-op also offers a wide array of vegan choices, from Lightlife vegan-brand imitation meats to almond milk.

  6. Step 6

Stock up on Tofutti Cuties. These vegan ice cream sandwiches are a must in that California heat. All of the products that Tofutti makes are delicious, nondairy treats to refresh that sweets-loving Southern California vegan.

  7. Step 7

Go to your local California Arbonne representative. Not only will you be supporting an independent, local business, you will also be supporting a company that has only vegan products. See the link in the Resources section.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to read labels, even if a company is known as a vegan one. You never know what a product may contain. If the product has a PETA-approved label that is genuine--or a "vegan" stamp--it's safe. Otherwise, read on.
