Make an Idiots Delight Chain
Make an Idiots Delight Chain

There are many different weaves for chain jewelry. One weave is called an idiot's delight chain but is also known as the Byzantine chain or the bird cage pattern. It consists of wire jump rings going in all different directions. This chain weave looks difficult to make but you might be surprised at how simple it really is. This style of chain can be made into rings, bracelets or necklaces. If you want to make a beautiful piece of jewelry, then try making an idiot's delight chain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chain nose pliers
  • Jump rings
  • Clasp
  1. Step 1

Start with 2 rings. Add 2 more rings to each side of the beginning double rings. You should now have 3 links of double chain.

  2. Step 2

Flip the rings of one open end back towards the other end. It will be opened slightly.

  3. Step 3

Add 2 rings to the bottom of the rings that were flipped back. Fix 2 more links of double chain to the open end.

  4. Step 4

Flip the open double rings back and add a double ring to the bottom of the rings just turned back.

  5. Step 5

Add 2 double chain links to each end. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 until you have the desired length. Add an open double ring to each end and then add a clasp to one of the open rings to fasten shut.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using a 18-gauge jump ring until you get the hang of it. Smaller rings may pull apart. If you find this size too bulky for your project, then go to a smaller gauge. Jump rings are made of different materials, like silver, copper or gold. They are also available in different colors.
  • The smaller rings make more delicate chains. You can also add stones to the chain weaves to make interesting jewelry.
  • An idiot's delight chain could make an unforgettable present for someone special or an addition to your own jewelry collection.
  • Remember that the higher the gauge, the smaller the jump ring.
  • When opening and closing the rings, use the pliers. Pull one end towards you while you pull the other end away from you. Do this gently or the rings will not set straight. If you pull them apart sideways you will warp and ruin the ring.
  • Remember to buy a lot of whichever kind of jump rings you decide to use. It will take many rings to make a necklace or a bracelet.
