How to Make a Sheath for a Hand Saw
Your sharp-edged tools may very well be the ones you end up replacing the most frequently. That’s because their sharp edges are always being worn down. And while you can’t do too much to prevent blade wear when you’re actually cutting, you can do quite a bit to preserve the integrity of your saw blades when they’re in storage. Too often, saws are recklessly thrown into toolboxes and storage bins, and the teeth of their blades get bent in the process. But if you retrofit your saws with sheaths, you can continue to treat your saws rough, without worrying about the integrity of the blades. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Hold the saw up against a straightened section of an old rubber garden hose. Use a utility knife to cut a section of hose that is roughly as long as the saw blade.
-
2
Cut a slit down the length of the section of hose. Make sure that the slit goes all the way through the rubber.

-
3
Slide the cut edge of the hose over the exposed blade of the saw. The stiffness of the hose should hold it in place over the blade, protecting it from nicks and bending.

Tips & Warnings
This is a great way to make use of an old hose you were planning to throw away. But if you don’t have an old hose, ask your local hardware stores if they have hose remnants you can buy. Or, look for a store that sells hose by the foot.
