Make a Singing Voice Stronger

Whether you are a professional singer or simply want to sound a little better when you sing in church on Sunday morning, you can find many ways to make your voice sound stronger. Those who speak for a living, such as radio talk show hosts and professional circuit speakers, know that not using your voice correctly can result in strained vocal chords, hoarseness and sometimes a complete loss of voice for days on end. It does little good to strengthen ability, if the voice is then strained from bad habits. Here's how to strengthen your singing voice.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink water every day. Water keeps your vocal chords lubricated and will help avoid strain from dryness. This may seem very easy, but many people do not get enough water. Drink around eight glasses of water daily. (This amount varies based on weight and other factors.)

    • 2

Always warm up your voice before singing. Many exercises can do this, from scales to specific warm-up exercises. (See Resources below.)

    • 3

Use breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs and technique. Likely, if you want to "strengthen your voice," you mean that you want more power and dynamics behind your voice. Most singers do not use their lungs to their full capacity. Breathing exercises increase your awareness of how you use air and can aid in strengthening the voice. (See Resources below.)

    • 4

Choose a song and practice it. Although you can choose many exercises to help with technique and breathing, many vocal coaches adhere to the "practice makes perfect" model, encouraging students to sing, and sing often. The act of singing also strengthens the voice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find the best vocal coach you can afford and get regular direction on using your voice.

  • Practice a little every day for the best voice development.

  • Never sing when it hurts or feels particularly strained, as you can damage your vocal chords.

  • Avoid dairy products before singing, as they can create phlegm.
