Crochet is the craft of creating fabric from yarn using a pattern of knots and loops that are stitched together to make an intricate design. There are various ways to crochet and several types of stitches and loops used to create many unique designs. One important stitch used in crochet patterns is the slip stitch. The slip is a fundamental stitch that can be used to join unattached blocks and patterns, move yarn across a plane without cutting yarn, bind stitches, for working along neck and hemlines, adding dimension without creating bulk and reinforcing edges. The following instructions assume that you know how to do a foundation chain and single crochet stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a foundation chain of single crochet.

    • 2

After you’ve made a foundation chain, turn back counter-clockwise to start the next row. Skip the first chain stitch and insert your hook through the second chain. You will have two loops on the hook.

    • 3

Bring the working yarn over your hook from back to front and grab it with the small hook on your crochet hook.

    • 4

Pull the working yarn through both the chain stitch and the back loop still on your crochet hook. The loop remaining on your hook is the loop you just created from your working yarn.

    • 5

Finish the row. Continue making slip stitches by following Steps 2 and 3 with each of the remaining chain stitches in your foundation row.
