Caring for Aging Parents
Watching a parent age can be difficult. Caring for that parent can be even more difficult. When the process of aging makes a once independent mother or father dependent upon their children, the transition doesn’t always go as smoothly as one would hope it would. Knowing what to expect and what preliminary steps you should take to help you with your role as caregiver can be helpful. Let the steps below act as a guide to assist you in caring for an aging parent.

1
Expect having to assist your aging parent with personal care. You may have to help your parent bathe and change his clothes regularly. A professional such as an occupational therapist or home health aide can instruct you on how to perform these tasks in a way that is best for you and your parent.
-
2
Deal with your aging parent’s needs in a loving way. If you and your parent were never close as a result of a disagreement in the past, seek the advice of a support group on how to handle the situation.

3
Treat yourself with TLC and learn how to deal with stress. Caring for an aging parent can be quite stressful and can weaken you physically and mentally. Do things that make you happy and laugh a lot. Laughing is good for the immune system. Allow the aging parent to keep in touch with friends.
-
4
Have someone trained as a caregiver come to the house to care for your parent every once in a while. You will need to take a break from caregiving every now and then.
-
5
Find ways to lessen your workload. If you cook for your aging parent, make dishes that can be frozen and make them in large quantities so you won’t have to cook the same dish again for a while. When you’re ready to serve that dish again, all you’ll have to do is take it out of the freezer, thaw it out, heat it up and serve it.
