How to Crochet a Shawl for Babies

A new baby can mean a lot of love and warmth for your home, but come winter, the baby needs to be shielded from the cold. This is a small shawl meant to protect the little one from the cold, but it can also be a fun project for grown-ups to make in an afternoon with some leftover yarn. With only basic crocheting skills and part of a skein of yarn, you could make a cute little shawl for your littlest loved one. This tutorial will combine double- and single-crochet stitches to create a shawl to wrap around the shoulders of a 6 to 8 month old, but the size can be adjusted based on how long you make your first chain stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a chain stitch about 60 stitches in length. This should be about 20 inches long.

    • 2

Crochet a line of double-crochet stitches for your second, third and fourth rows.

    • 3

Start your fifth row with three double-crochet stitches.

    • 4

Continue stitching your fifth row with single-crochet stitches until you are about two inches from the edge.

    • 5

Finish your fifth row with three double-crochet stitches. Your fifth row will have three double-crochet stitches at each edge and will be filled out with single-crochet stitches.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3 to 5 until the shawl is two inches shy of your desired length.

    • 7

Once you are two inches shy of your desired length, stitch four more rows of strictly double-crochet stitches.

    • 8

You can either close the shawl with a pin or loop a thin piece of ribbon through the double-crochet stitches in one of the top rows to create a drawstring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to create an extra three chain stitches at the end of each row for an attractive row.

  • Make sure to use a soft yarn to create a soft shawl for your baby.
