Qualified teachers are needed in the South African educational system in order to provide children with a quality education as well as a means of bridging a cultural gap. To get into South Africa, it is best to use an organization that will help you get into the country and, most often, help you to be placed into a school. Provided in this article is a list of four organizations that will assist you in making your dream a reality. Each organization varies in requirements.
Contact World Teach. Established in 1986, World Teach is a Harvard University-sponsored program that recruits teacher volunteers to be sent into developing countries. After paying a fee to enter into the program, you will go through a series of interviews, applications, and evaluations before embarking on a seven- to twelve-month stay in South Africa. During your stay, you will be housed by the school. World Teach requires that you hold a bachelors degree and are fluent in the English language.
Apply to become a Teach South Africa Ambassador. Teach South Africa is an organization that seeks ambitious teachers to become ambassadors into the South African public school system. An online application is available and requires a series of essays to be answered, all in effort to prepared you for a battery of interviews and evaluations prior to being chosen as a candidate. To be eligible for this program, you must be a citizen or legal resident of South Africa. A non-resident applying for the opportunity must already hold a degree in education.
Contact Global Vision International. Global Vision organizes volunteers to go to work in the lives of South African school children. The foundation charges a registration fee that varies according to the length of time you plan to spend on the project. The online application consists of your contact information plus short essays about your personal interests, travel experience, medical information and reasons that you are interested in teaching in South Africa. In visiting the website, you will find an overview of what is expected of you in the program, as well as an example of daily life working in South Africa as a volunteer.
Contact Global Crossroad. Global Crossroad offers a variety of South African programs. Through this organization, you can choose to volunteer, be an intern or work on a job or for a summer program. This organization does not require any other qualifications other than to speak English fluently. Established in 2003, Global Crossroad has provided 6,000 participants with the once in a lifetime opportunity to share our language and culture with countries abroad, such as South Africa.
