How to Treat Carbamate and Organophosphate Toxicity in Dogs

Dogs that ingest flea collars, ant traps or roach traps may experience organophosphate toxicity. This is a type of insecticide that is present in all of these products. Although any dog can experience this condition puppies may be more susceptible because of their curious nature. This is a very serious health condition that requires immediate care.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your dog for symptoms of organophosphate toxicity. Signs of this condition may include vomiting, diarrhea and weakness. In addition, your canine may experience muscle tremors and paralysis.

    • 2

Transport your canine to the animal hospital. If your dog is weak have someone assist in carrying your dog to the car. Call the vet and advise of your arrival so they will be ready to treat your canine.

    • 3

Partner with the vet to create a treatment plan for your dog. If your dog’s skin has been exposed to the toxic substance a bath in warm water can reduce exposure. Active charcoal may also be given to reduce the amount of poison the stomach absorbs. A medication called atropine is also used for this specific type of toxicity.

    • 4

Make sure your dog is hydrated. When you bring your canine home from the hospital make sure she stays hydrated. Gently coax her to drink water often. This will aid in her recovery efforts.

    • 5

Monitor her condition closely. If your dog has made it home from the hospital that’s a great sign. But she will still need constant monitoring while recovering. If she begins to vomit or seems reluctant to eat take her back to the vet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reduce activity while healing. Keep your canine’s activity to a minimum. Have your dog indoors and only take her outside for bathroom breaks. Keeping your canine leashed can help cut down on excess roaming.

  • Administer medication as directed by the vet. Even if your canine appears to be recovering, it’s important to administer medication as prescribed by the doctor. Stopping medication early can cause additional health complications.
