Turn down the heat. Heat dries out the scalp just like any other part of the skin. Turn down the water temperature when washing your hair and turn down the blow dryer when drying it. Don't aim the hair dryer directly at your scalp, which dries it out further.

Rinsing your hair once a week in apple cider vinegar will balance the Ph level of your hair, which can cause your scalp to itch. Simply pour 1/4 cup of vinegar over your hair and massage it into your scalp, then rinse it with warm water.

Make a once a week hair treatment that smells wonderful and keeps itchy scalp away by combining 1/2 cup water with three drops of each of the essential oils of chamomile, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint and lavender. After washing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo, massage conditioner into your scalp and rinse. Pour the water and oil mixture over your hair and let it sit two minutes before rinsing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any of these oils, especially peppermint oil, is good for immediate itch relief--just massage two or three drops into your scalp.

  • Make sure that what you have is dry scalp, not dandruff, which is actually caused by a fungus. If you have larger oily patches on your scalp it is probably dandruff and needs a special dandruff shampoo. Dry scalp shows itself by small flakes, if at all.
