Instructions

    • 1

Pick the fabric to make your curtains. Cotton and cotton blends are the easiest to work with when you have no experience or limited experience making curtains with a hot glue gun. As you become more experienced, you can use fabrics that tend to slide more, such as silks and satins.

    • 2

Measure the windows and cut the fabric accordingly. Add at least 1 inch to the top, bottom and both sides. The less experience you have, the larger the hems should be. This will help you when it is time to glue them together. Leave enough of a hem at the top to put a curtain rod through it. The size of this hem will vary, depending on the size of your curtain rod.

    • 3

Iron a crease for all four hems. Use the correct heat setting on your iron for the type of fabric you are using. If in doubt, use the coolest setting. It will take longer, but it is better than scorching the fabric.

    • 4

Lay the fabric on a hard, smooth surface. Make sure that the surface is large enough to accommodate most of the fabric. It is easier to work with the fabric when you can see all of it and move it around as you need to.

    • 5

Place small dots of hot glue on the edge of the fabric and fold it over. Hold the fabric together for a few seconds. If you prefer, you can pin the fabric together. Don’t forget to take out the pins when you are finished. Repeat this process until you come to the end. Begin this again on all of the hems. Be careful to only add glue to a few inches of the fabric at a time. The glue cools quickly and won’t stick if the area you are working with is too large.

    • 6

Use the hot glue gun to add trimmings to your curtains. You can add feathers, rhinestones, ribbons and patches of other fabric.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice on scraps of fabric before you begin. That will help you know how fast the glue cools.

  • A "cool" glue gun can also be used.

  • Instead of hemming all four sides, you can just hem the top. Hot-glue ribbon to the sides to hide the rough edges.

  • Once you have mastered this technique, you can even make gathers in the fabric. It is harder and takes longer, but it can be done.

  • Do not burn yourself with the hot glue gun or the iron. They get extremely hot.

  • Do not get discouraged if it doesn’t look perfect. If you aren't happy with your work, simply pull the hems apart, remove the glue and begin again.
