Jack o' lanterns are the epitome of Halloween. Whether they wear a smiling face or a ghoulish scowl, they have a place in millions of American homes in the Halloween season. Follow the steps here to dress up your child as the cutest baby jack o' lantern this Halloween.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Orange baby sleeper (or jumper)
  • Paper plate or white paper
  • Tracing pen
  • Scissors
  • Crafting felt (orange, black, green)
  • Straight pins
  • Black thread
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Orange thin ribbon
  1. Step 1

Purchase an orange baby sleeper or jumper. This should be of the kind that has legs and long sleeves and is warm enough to withstand the cool October evenings. Wash the sleeper before you begin the project so as to prevent any later shrinkage.

  2. Step 2

Draw a jack-o-lantern face pattern onto a paper plate, or on a plain piece of paper. Cut out the design and lay it out on the black crafting felt. Use straight pins to secure the pattern to the felt. Using the pattern as a template, cut carefully around the edges to cut out a jack-o-lantern face from the felt. Remove the pins holding the paper patterns to the felt and set them aside.

  3. Step 3

Lay the orange baby sleeper out flat on an open workspace. Make sure that the zipper is completely zipped up. Using the straight pins, attach the felt jack-o-lantern face pieces onto the jumper, over the stomach and the chest area. Hand-stitch or machine-stitch the felt pieces onto the orange sleeper. Remove the straight pins that you used to hold the black felt pieces onto the sleeper.

  4. Step 4

Measure your baby's head, by placing one end of the measuring tape slightly below the hair line, and laying it over the top of their head, down to the back of the head. Place the measuring tape on the orange felt, and make a mark at the beginning, and at the end of the measurement. Place the tape over the head again, this time crosswise, then measure and make the marks on the felt, crosswise.

  5. Step 5

Repeat this process, offsetting the tape slightly on the head, until the marks on your felt form a circle. Cut out this circle from the felt.

  6. Step 6

Cut two lengths of orange ribbon, each one 8 inches long. Attach these two small orange ribbons to each side of the circle.

  7. Step 7

Cut a 4 x 2-inch long rectangle from the green felt. Stitch the two long sides together to form a tube. This will serve as the stem of the pumpkin. Hand stitch this stem to the center of the orange felt circle.

  8. Step 8

Dress the baby in the orange sleeper and place the orange felt circle with its stem on his head, attaching it with ribbons tied beneath the chin.
