How to Coach Passing in 2v2 Soccer Games
Passing is one of the most fundamental skills in soccer, along with heading, dribbling, shooting, receiving and tackling. It is a vital component of any successful attack. 2v2 games offer a lot of scope for developing passing skills while adding the element of decision-making that is so often lacking in traditional drills.

1
Know the qualities of a good pass. A pass must have four good qualities to be effective: weight or pace (the speed of the pass), accuracy, timing and disguise. Timing refers to the ball and the receiver arriving at the same spot at the same time. Disguise is merely any feint that throws off defenders from the true intentions of the passes.

2
Set up several 2v2 grids of 20 yards long by 10 yards wide, or 30 yards long by 20 yards wide, depending on age and skill level. Make enough grids such that there is a minimum of spare players waiting to play. Set 2-yard-wide goals at the ends of each grid. Divide the squad into teams.

To condition the games for weight or pace of the pace, as well as timing, implement the rule that to score, the passer must pass to the receiver just as he crosses the end line. That is, the receiver will make a run past the end line a second before the pass is made. The receiver must control the ball with his first touch. This requires the passer to make the pass strong enough to reach the target. If it has too much pace, however, it will be difficult to control.

4
To work on timing, condition the game such that goals are scored by dribbling through the small goal. This increases the use of one- and two-touch passing, which must be timed well to be successful. Extra conditions can be put on the game, for example, a wall pass must be attempted before a goal can be scored to bring up the idea of one- and two-touch passing.
-
5
Condition the game such that goals cannot be scored by a team unless a certain number of passes are made in their possession. This increases repetitions of passing as well as receiving.

6
Play a 2v2 game on a long, narrow field, divided into two halves. Play 1v1 in each half. Players may not enter the other half and must play in their designated half of the field. This works on driven and lofted passes from the defensive half to the attacking half. Ensure that players get to play the roles of attacker and defender.
