How to Become a Medical Office Specialist

Working in a medical center can have the potential to be a long-term career, if you receive the proper training beforehand. Once you have completed a thorough study program, becoming a medical office specialist shouldn't be too difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand what being a medical office specialist entails. You might work as an administrative assistant, receptionist, accounting clerk, medical biller or office supervisor.

    • 2

Decide if being a medical office specialist is right for you. In many cases, you will be in direct contact with patients, health care professionals and other office specialists. Hospitals and medical offices can be high-stress environments, with a lot of physical and emotional demands on you.

    • 3

Find a training program. You'll find some as distance learning programs online and others as physical school programs through vocational/trade schools and community colleges. Kaplan University offers online courses to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in medical assisting. Once you have earned that degree, you can work in a laboratory, clinic or hospital setting. The Kaplan University course teaches exam and testing procedures as well as basic paperwork and includes a hands-on practical class where you work in an actual medical setting.

Consider learning in a setting that is more like an office and less like a hospital. Herzing College's distance learning program teaches medical billing and coding, administration, accounting and human resources in a medical setting. At the completion of the program, you will have earned a Bachelor of Science in health care management. This program takes several years to complete because it is a degree program.

Take a shorter course to earn a career diploma/certificate. The Penn Foster School of Health Services teaches you how to schedule appointments, update patient records and manage a medical office.

    • 6

Complete your chosen training program. Some programs last a year and a half, while others might be two years or more. Many study programs take place partly in a classroom and partly in a real-world work environment, giving you hands-on training so that you will learn exactly what it will be like once you graduate and get a job.

    • 7

Find a job after you have graduated from your training program. Some schools offer career placement programs when you have completed your courses, so you always start there. If the school you attended does not have job placement, or if it cannot find you anything suitable, look at job search websites that specialize in medical specialist positions. The Medical Office Jobs website lets you search jobs in many different categories, including Front Office, Medical Records, Billing and Medical Assisting. The Medplacer website also caters specifically to jobs in medical settings, though they also carry a lot of openings for physicians and medical professionals, so you need to search through long lists of jobs you are not qualified for before you find some that you are.
