Things You'll Need:
- Plain paper plate (dessert size works best for small hands)
- Metal hole punch
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Craft jingle bells with an attaching loop on top
- Yarn, embroidery floss, or thin ribbon or trim
- White craft glue(optional)
- Glitter(optional)
-
Step 1
Use the metal hole punch to punch holes 1-inch apart all along the edge of the plate. Make sure they are far enough away from the edge of the plate so the hole doesn’t rip while the instrument is being played.
-
Step 2
Give the children crayons or colored pencils to decorate the paper plates with. Tell them to color both sides of the plate.
-
Step 3
Use yarn, embroidery floss or thin ribbon to tie the bells to the paper tambourine. Thread a piece of floss, yarn or ribbon through the loop on top of the jingle bell. Next, thread it through the hole in the plate and double tie a knot with the two lose ends to make sure the bell stays on the tambourine. Add bells all the way around the paper plate, filling every punched hole. Try making some with larger jingle bells and some with smaller bells so the sounds will be different.
-
Step 4
Make the paper plate tambourines more ornate by threading more yarn, ribbon or floss through the holes going all the way around the plate like you are sewing it with a running stitch. Add glue and glitter to give them a little more visual sparkle. Make sure the glue is dry before the children use them for making music.
