Even if you were born with small lips, that's no reason to immediately consider an augmentation by way of a painful procedure. Try using makeup first. It's much less costly and, when applied skillfully, it yields believable and natural-looking results. Before you turn to topical lip plumpers--which have a tendency to dry out lips--play with a light-colored lipstick or lip gloss, a highlighter pencil or a creamy highlighter. You'll see that there are several options available in the form of these products that specialize in drawing light in.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lip balm or moisturizer
  • Pointy concealer brush
  • Shimmery highlighter
  • Flesh tone or white lip pencil with a sheer shimmery finish
  • Lip brush
  • Shimmery lip color a shade or two lighter than your main one
  1. Step 1

Begin always with a clean, exfoliated mouth. Highlighting calls attention to an area, and you don't want the focus to be on dry, flaky lips.

  2. Step 2

Moisturize lips. Allow balm to absorb into skin for about a minute prior to proceeding. Now is the time to complete any other steps you take to prep your mouth for color, such as using foundation over lips. This isn't necessary all the time, but it is advisable if you want to create a clean base for your color.

  3. Step 3

Use a pointy concealer brush to enhance the bow of your lips with a shimmery highlighter. Pat it with a clean finger to blend. When the light hits the area, the shape of your Cupid's bow will be more noticeable.

  4. Step 4

Run a sheer flesh tone pencil--or a white one, if you are fair-skinned--with subtle shimmer over your lip line, allowing it to go slightly past. Blend the product gently into your skin with a clean finger. This is done prior to lipstick application, even before the mouth is lined and filled in with a lip liner. You may use this technique only where you need it--for instance, along the upper lip line if your top lip is smaller than your bottom one and vice versa.

  5. Step 5

Apply your lip color as usual, except keep the center of both top and bottom lips bare. Fill in these areas with a color that's a shade or two lighter than the rest of your lips. You may use one with shimmer particles to make lips look even plumper and fuller. With a lip brush, fade the edges of each color seamlessly into the next one.

Tips & Warnings
