Step 1
Pick a picture that you want to use for your dream avatar. You can either pick a picture of yourself or of a cartoon character that you really like, depending on what you want your avatar to look like. You can use a picture you already have or find one on the Internet that piques your interest. Once you’ve picked the picture, download it to your desktop or save it somewhere on your computer where you can easily access it.
-
Step 2
Upload the picture you have chosen. Many avatar-building programs have the option of using one of their pre-designed avatars or starting from scratch with a picture of your own. With most programs, starting from scratch with a picture you have chosen is as simple as clicking an "Upload Picture" button within the program.
-
Step 3
Download an avatar program. The easiest program to use is called GIMP because it is very user-friendly and completely free to use. Other programs you can use are Photoshop, Paint and Paint Pro Shop among others. You can play around with the different programs and find one that you enjoy using.
-
Step 4
Open the program of your choice and configure the settings. The best size (in pixels) for avatars is 100 by 100 because that's when they have the best resolution. Depending on which avatar-building program you use, this could be as simple as typing in the numbers in a designated box.
-
Step 5
Choose your background design. Once you’ve resized your picture, you can add borders and other features to make your avatar more creative. It's easy to play around with different features and borders because avatar-building programs allow you to erase any changes that you don't like.
-
Step 6
Add texts. If you want to add your name or any other type of texts to your dream avatar, your avatar-building program should have an "Add Text" option or something similar with various styles, colors and fonts. Choose what type of font, size and color you want and add it to the avatar. Space is limited, though, so make each letter count.
