Sewing in hair weaves is something generally done by hairstylists, but with some practice, you can learn to do it yourself. However, you need to be careful to follow the instructions carefully to prevent breakage and hair loss. Here are a few helpful tips that will guide you through the process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Curved needle with a dull tip
  • Hair weave thread to match your hair color
  • Weave hair (human)
  1. Step 1

Wash the hair in order to remove any excess oils. Make sure that your hair is dried thoroughly before you start.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you will add the tracks of the weave hair. You can sew in hair weaves to cover the entire scalp or to add length and thickness in certain areas.

  3. Step 3

Make cornrow braids that are flat against the head where you want to sew in the hair weaves. Make sure that the braids are done tight enough to not come apart, but loose enough to not cause pain. If you want to weave the entire head, make a single cornrow that makes a spiral all the way around the head until the entire scalp is braided.

  4. Step 4

Take the end of the braid, bend it back and tuck it into the cornrow. Use the thread and needle to sew the end of the braid to the actual cornrow. Continue sewing the cornrow to make it tight.

  5. Step 5

Take a track (length) of weave and cut it to the length of the cornrow. Start at one end and sew the track to the cornrow braid. Make sure that each end is secure, and cut the thread with a pair of scissors. Do not pull the thread as you can make the weave too tight.

  6. Step 6

Continue to sew the tracks to the cornrows, and when you are done, trim and style the hair as you would your regular hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use human hair for weaves.
  • Apply oil to the scalp to reduce itching.
  • Be careful about pulling on weaved hair as it can cause breakage.
