When the edges of plastic kitchen utensils, such as spatulas and serving spoons, become rough or melted, throwing them away may be the first instinct. However, those utensils are still perfectly good. A little polishing is all it takes to restore them to their former glory and keep them from scratching nonstick surfaces while in use.

From Quick Guide: Cooking Utensils
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Trim away any rough, tattered or flaking edges on the cooking utensils with the kitchen shears. Do this gradually to make sure enough utensil remains to be useful.

  2. Step 2

File down the blunt edge with the pumice stone. Depending on the utensil's intended purpose, the cut side can either be shaped to have a flat or angled edge.

  3. Step 3

Wash the kitchen utensil in hot water with liquid dish soap, making sure to clear away all dust and plastic debris. Let the utensil air dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to purchase a new pumice stone to be used specifically for this purpose. Using a pumice stone from a pedicure kit is unhygienic.
