Copyright free photos are photos that the photographer has designated as free to use for personal or professional use. Technically, the photographer still owns the copyright; he has only granted permission for others to use the image. You cannot generally sell the image itself, but you can incorporate it into your work, provided credit is given to the photographer. There are several databases that are easily accessible online where you can find images to use for your work.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Database
  1. Step 1

Locate the database (see resources) you desire to search. Most require you to sign up in order to access the available photos, but this is generally a free service. Be sure to read the usage rights carefully. Some sites and photographers require permission before you can use the image, although most simply ask that you notify the photographer that you are using an image. Take the time to compose a message to the photographer thanking him for providing the photo and tell him where the photo will be published.

  2. Step 2

Download the image to your computer. Be sure to rename the file and note the photographer. You will need this in the future should you decide to reuse the photo for other work. Add the photo to your work following submission guidelines, if publishing online. Be sure to include credit to the photographer and the site where you downloaded the image. Unless instructed otherwise by the publisher, state the photographers name/site name. For example, "John Doe/morguefile."

  3. Step 3

Send the photographer an email and tell her when your work will be published. Be sure to provide a link to the article and to thank the photographer again. Not only are you providing her with access to her work, but gaining additional exposure as well. Photographers are eager to see how their work is being used and may refer friends and family to check it out too.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never use photos found on other sites or from Google images, unless a disclaimer specifically states that you have permission to use the photo. Even if you provide credit to the photographer or the website, you still violate copyright laws by using someone else's work for your own gain.
